Sprucing Up

The boys are in desperate need of new decorating in their bedrooms. I am trying to find a nice bedspread for Tylers room with stars and stripes in blues, whites and reds and this is proving harder than I thought. Even though he won't give up his current bed spread which is quite daggy and doesn't fit the doona properly. Tyler has a queen size bed, yes I know only aged 5 with a queen bed. We had to give up the guest bedroom but kept the bed and Tyler was very happy to score this one. The down side to this is when people stay Tyler has to give up his bed. So finding a children queen size doona isn't the easiest. I was wondering that if I got myself into order I may have to sew up one with patchwork pieces. As much as I love sewing I don't quite have to room to execute this. If it were for a girls room, there would be no dilemma.

I found a picture of these stunning floor pillows that would look gorgeous as opposed to a beanbag. Then it's the lampshade, bunting, floor rug. Where does it end? Needing ideas, I guess it's another excuse for me to buy a heap of house magazines (any excuse really).  What sorts of boys bedroom themes other than cars, dinosaurs and animals are there?

Lego Party

I have finally gotten around to sharing Tyler's 5th Birthday Party with you. His theme was 'Lego' which was well chosen. We decorated our newly rented house as best as we could, with lego colours, we even found a tent in the shed to fill up with lego for the children to build their towers. A great way to keep Lego contained and children thought it was a little hide out.

I planned at least 10 party games for the children, typical teacher planned way too many activities. The children really just enjoyed playing in the sandpit, building with lego, riding bikes, drawing chalk on the concrete and  totem tennis. I couldn't believe it. Yes the children entertained themselves!!They didn't need jumping castles, farm animals, face painters and all of the other entertainment activities that we seem to think they many need. We didn't get through all of our activities because they were busy having fun.

We did include the typical typical party games with Pin the smile on the 'Lego Man', that was a hit, pass the parcel and this was wrapped with a little lolly watch in every wrap so everyone got a prize (didn't want to upset anyone). I found that wrapping each layer in a different paper certainly helped distinguish layers when unwrapping.

We brought out our bubble machine and the children loved to dance to this and a scavenger hunt at the end, with children finding a small parcel, bringing it back to me and I gave them their take home party bag. The party bag was a red noodle box with a lego sticker on the front and filled with bubbles, balloons and lollies. I forgot to take a photo of these, the day went so fast, that is the one thing I regret not taking enough photos.

I was asked if I could make the Lego cake again, even though I tried to talk Tyler into different coloured cupcakes with a Lego topper but his mind was made up and now I think he definitely made the right choice. The lego cake was made up of 4 layers, each a different colour and marshmallow for the lego bumps on top. I put this cake on a lego board to stick with the theme. We had layered coloured jelly, fruit platters, cake pops, rocky road, golf balls and coloured lollies (lego colours). Our food was simple but popular with the children. As it was a late afternoon tea party we didn't have any hot food and it was such a hot day, the rocky road was lucky to have survived the afternoon.

The children had a ball which is the most important thing, it makes the bags under the eyes and messy kitchen worth it.

Life!

I have been reading this poster everyday this week. It hangs 4 metres tall on the wall of my gym. Yes, I am back into it, finally. I know there are so many bus scrolls out there now but I think this one is different from the rest. This one really makes you want to take life by the horns. Well it works while I am in the gym thats for sure. I find myself coming back!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Summer Read

We are off to the beach pretty soon so I thought I had better get some 'summer books' if I get time to read them. I am a huge fan of Jane Green. Her books are easy to read, no thinking involved which is perfect when all I want to do is chill out.

I grabbed 'The Beach House' and of course couldn't help myself, I started to read the first page just to make sure this is the perfect book to take away. Then the first page became the second then the third and before I knew it I was 100 pages in and hooked.

After 4 nights this book has been read and thoroughly enjoyed. So 'The Beach House' didn't quite make it to the beach.  I was disappointed the book came to end so now I am on the hunt for a new book. Might have to pack the next one away, out of sight.

How cool would it be to wake up to this on your birthday? I found this photo after Tyler's birthday of course.  Have to remember this for next year.

Tyler woke up to a treasure map at the end of his bed. Poor boy, he did find it difficult to follow due to my mapping skills. He found marked at each  'x' there was present wrapped for him and there were 6 of these so we had one very excited 5 year old. With the best present left till last of course.

We spent the morning at 'Fun Bugs' a kids indoor activity place, home for lunch and a rest before going out to dinner. When I questioned why he chose a particular restaurant he told me the service was quick. Wow! The expectations of a 5 year old these days, has certainly changed.

Off to the zoo tomorrow with friends  and that concludes Tyler's week long party and a rest for mum and dad.

Have a great weekend

Back To School

Image: Pinterest

I wish all of the children and parents the best of  luck today. It can be quite an emotional day especially when the little ones are off to experience their first year of school. Teachers are exceptionally understanding when dealing with emotions from both children and parents.

As a teacher, I had many parents shed a tear as they watch their little ones hang up their bag and say goodbye. Most of the time the children were excited to be at school and telling their parents to leave. It was the parents who didn't want to leave. Now being a parent  I totally understand how they were feeling.

Next year, it will be my turn and my stomach churns just at the thought of sending my first born off to school. We are off to 4 year old kinder this year and he has already told me he is happy not be going to school because he gets to spend more time with me, 'ahhh'. I am certainly not complaining because I know I will never get this chance again once he goes to school.

Today is a very special day for my boy, he turns 5! We cannot believe how quick this time has gone. We are so proud of our boy, he has turned out to be such a well mannered, caring, beautiful boy, who continually makes us laugh. We cannot imagine our lives without him and appreciate everyday we have with him.

So today we are partying at home instead of school. Hopefully we aren't sending him to school on his birthday next year or there will be tears (from me)!

We celebrated Tyler's 5th birthday with his friends on the weekend, so I hope to share those soon.
Have a great day xx
